How to Spot a Card Cheat Before They Steal All Your Money!

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

I love to play cards. I usually play with my friends and sometimes with my family, so I’m not too worried about getting cheated out of my money. But sometimes I like to play in larger games with people that I don’t know all that well, or at the casino. And while you generally don’t have to worry about getting cheated at the casino, they have excellent security to rival most nuclear missile silos, it’s still something that I keep in the back of my mind. And of course, when I play with larger groups made up of people who are not my close friends, I’m always on the lookout for a cheat.

One gambling survey that I read one time suggested that 10% of all card games have cheating involved in them. So here are some ways to protect yourself and make sure you never get cheated…

When somebody shuffles the cards, make sure they never take them entirely off the table, not for any reason whatsoever. Often times a cheater will mess with the deck while it is under the table and you can’t see just what they are doing. Sometimes they will switch the decks completely under the table or off the table and when it happens, you may not be able to see it.

Another way to cut down on cheating is to make sure that you cut the cards at least one time during every single shuffle. Do this by pulling out the bottom half and placing it on the top of the pile. This simple act can cut down cheating dramatically as long as you do it every time somebody shuffles. Make sure the person cutting cards is not the same person that shuffled the cards, and make sure the same person doesn’t cut the cards every time.

If you think the cards that you are using have been marked in some way then riffle the deck. While you do this watch the back of the cards. A marked deck, when rifled, will show an animated sort of thing when they are rifled. That is to say, the design will shift like those flip books you made when you were a child. Remember those little animated cartoons used to draw on several sheets of paper when you were little? When you rifled the paper quickly a cartoon danced across the paper? That’s what you are looking for here…

If the deck has not been marked, the design on the back will not shift or move it anyway when you rifle the deck. This is a very easy test that you can do any time to see if your deck has been tampered with.

How can you tell who has brought the marked deck? Well, this is a little tricky. You have to watch each player, and watch their eyes. The person who brought the marked deck, is the person who keeps their eyes glued to the cards in everybody’s hands. If you see somebody staring at the back of everybody’s cards, then they are probably the person who brought the marked deck to the game.

Finally, you should always sit with your back to the wall. This will help keep people from sneaking up behind you while you are not paying attention and looking over your shoulder to see what cards you have and then signaling to the other players. It also keeps surveillance objects, like video cameras, from seeing your hand as easily.

So there you have it! How to protect yourself and spot a card cheat before they steal all your money.

How to Save Money With Coupons the Right Way

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

By: Jason Markum

Everybody loves to save money, I know I do! And since this massive crazy recession started in late 2008, saving money has become more important than ever. One way to do it is to use coupons when purchasing groceries. But you need to use coupons the right way to take full advantage of the opportunities out there.

Since the recession started, we’ve seen a growing phenomenon in America… families are starting to eat more meals at home instead of eating out at restaurants. This is bad news for the restaurants, but good news for you because now coupons can go even further than ever before. Here’s what you need to know to take full advantage of coupon living…

First of all setup a system. Spend just a few minutes every week glancing through newspaper inserts and other places that are likely to have a lot of coupons. Cut out the coupons that you think you might use and put them in a shoebox or some other container. Once you’ve found all the coupons for the week, separate them out and group them by category. Next you want to mark all of these groups with their own id note card. You can be as specific or as general is you want in this labeling system.

Before you go to the store check your grocery list against the categorized labels of your coupons. Take out any coupons from any group you think you may be likely to use. Put the coupons in an envelope marked “unused”. Then as you shop and place items into your shopping cart, transfer the coupon for that item into a second envelope that you will mark as “used”. That way when you get to the counter to check out, you can simply hand the “used” envelope to the cashier. This will save you a lot of time, and the cashier a lot of time, and will be appreciated by the other people behind you in line.

Store up as many coupons as possible. You can find coupons from a wide variety of sources these days. Back in the day you could find coupons mostly in newspapers and on cartons and in containers of food you had purchased. These days that same thing applies, but you can also find great coupons right off the Internet that you can print out in your own home. Also keep a lookout in your junk mail that comes from the post office, as often you’ll find great coupons within.

Be sure to save any unused coupons. Take your unused coupons with you to the supermarket because many stores have a bin where you can dump your old coupons and other customers can use them. We’re all in this together after all!

Also think about joining a coupon exchange club. There are lots of these clubs available; some of them are quite large, and they all generally offer the same main service. This is how they usually work; when you join you fill out a specific form that indicates which products you use. From time to time members of the club will mail in coupons that they don’t need. When this happens, the club mails those coupons to you. Of course you will have to mail in your unused coupons as well.

Finally shop at coupon friendly stores and supermarkets. Some stores like coupons more than others, and you can usually tell which ones these are. Sometimes you can find a store that will give you double your coupons value while other stores may not want to honor your coupons at all and will only do so grudgingly.

However you use your coupons, be sure to use a consistent system because it will save you a huge amount of time in the long run, and it will also save you a huge amount of money.

How to Enjoy a Day at the Races Without Losing Your Shirt

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

By: Jason Markum

I love going to the races… but I hate losing all my money by making bad bets! If you think about it though, the point of going to the races shouldn’t really be about betting, it should be about enjoying the race. At least enjoying the race without losing your shirt! So how do you enjoy the race without feeling miserable from losing all your money with bad bets? That’s what I am going to talk about in this article today.

The first step is to decide how much money you are willing to lose. Set aside between one fourth and one fifth of that amount for entertainment betting, you know just for fun. The rest of that amount should be used for serious betting.

Next you need to control your spending. In order to do this, just bet around 20% of your capital every time you bet. And this doesn’t matter if you are winning or losing… even if you are winning, still continue to only bet about 20% of your capital each time.

Remember that 1/5 that we set aside for entertainment betting? Here’s what I suggest you do with it. Select a horse by name, or by jockey, or by appearance… or for any reason you want to under the sun. The point is, don’t put a lot of thought into it, just have fun and you may even get lucky and win a 10th of your bets this way.

On the other hand; for serious betting, stick to your tried and true rules. Always get rid of maiden races, that is, horses that are racing for the first time. Two-year-old races may also fall under this category. Also get rid of any horse that has never won before. Of course, these are just my personal suggestions and you’ll have your own.

In order to select the two or three horses most likely to win in any given race, check the handicappers choice in the racing form and tip sheets sold at the track. I usually look especially for handicappers who give as much detail as possible about each race. Look for things like how the race will be run, who the suggested front runners are, and who the “come from behind” horses may be. Also find ones that list suggested outcomes as there is usually some sort of logic behind these suggestions.

Next, consider the elements. Is it raining? In the racing form you will see what is called mudders, these are horses that have a history of doing well when it rains outside. Usually they are indicated with an asterisk. The more it rains, the more the track is softened by the rain, in the more the chances of these specific horses improve.

There are several types of bets that you can make at a horse race. You can bet to win, and that only pays out if the horse comes in first. You can also bet to place, and this pays out if the horse comes in first or second. Finally, you can also bet to show; and this pays out if the horse comes in first second or third. A combination of those bets such as a win and place or a show and win will usually increase your chance of a payoff, but in these circumstances the return will probably be smaller.

So there you have it! How to enjoy a day at the races without going broke and losing your shirt…

How to Score a Free Cruise Anywhere in the World

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

By: Jason Markum

There are tons and tons of travel guides and books out there that will teach you how to travel cheaply. Paris for four dollars a day, for instance. You’ve probably seen these books at the bookstore, or mentioned on your favorite Travel Channel show.

Traveling cheaply is good, make no mistake, but there’s something even better than traveling cheaply… and that is traveling for free!

Is traveling for free even possible? Hey, I’ll be the first one to tell you, if a thing seems too good to be true it usually is! But in this case it actually is possible for you to travel around the world absolutely free and in this article I’ll be discussing several ways that you can do that.

So what are we talking about here? Well to travel for free you need free transportation by air or by sea. You need free lodgings, that is hotels or something like that. And of course you need free food. Oh, and free entertainment would be nice too. So that’s basically what we’re looking for in a free travel opportunity.

The free travel Tip number one; complementary cruises. Many, if not most cruise lines will offer free passage to anyone who can recruit 10 or sometimes 15 paying passengers. A lot of airlines will also offer the same sort of thing. If you can’t get that many people to sign up for a cruise, let’s say you only get five or six maybe seven… you can still negotiate a discounted rate for yourself.

Recruitment not your thing? Then you can always sign up as an expert in some field. Historians are one example of the type of expert a cruise would like to get a hold of. Your job on the cruise is to simply present lectures to the passengers and be there to answer any questions they may have on your subject of expertise. It helps if you are distinguished, that is to say you have an advanced degree like a masters degree or PhD in the field in which you are claiming expertise in. And after you do this once, you can use the reference to get hired by other cruise lines much easier.

Free cruises can also be had if you are a doctor or even just a nurse and you’re willing to be on-call during the cruise. Many times the cruise will also offer you a slight salary in addition to your free cruise. And not just doctors, athletic directors and coaches who can help organize recreation, musicians and other entertainers who are willing to perform, and even hairdressers were willing to work a little during the cruise can all get free passage.

Another free cruise opportunity is a little more tricky… many cruises like to have what they call hosts. A host is an older gentleman, single, usually 50 years or older. It helps to be a distinguished sort of individual. A host’s job is to dine and dance with the older women on the cruise. I know, I know… but I just thought I would throw this one out there because it is a legitimate way to score a free cruise.

So there you have it several ways to travel for free! And some of them will even pay you money in addition to free travel, meals, and entertainment…

How To Find The Best Day-Care Services

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

By Jason Markum

These days, it is essential to find a good day care service for your children, especially if both parents work (as most of us do!). Finding the best day care service, one that is high-quality and professional and meets your kids exact needs can be difficult at the best of times.

Often times you will be confronted with several options. Picking between them can seem like a daunting task. How do you make a decision? How can you be sure that you have made the right decision? We’re talking about your childrens safety and well being here, so you don’t want to make any mistakes.

You’ve come to the right place because in this article I am going to discuss exactly how you should find and pick the best day-care services for your children.

The absolute first thing you should do is make a list of all the child-care services in your area. Look to see if your community has an R&R, that stands for resource and referral (sometimes they are called I&R for information and referral service). These places usually compile extensive information on child care services for a given area. Find them in your local phone book.

If your area doesn’t have an R&R, then check with your states child care licensing agency. This is usually going to be the Department of Human Services, or the Department of Social Services, or the Department of Health, and they can help you in your search.

If you strike out at both of these places, then just start asking around. Talk to other parents in the area, talk to your friends and family members, and if you go to church, talk to the people there. Sometimes churches keep a registry of child care services that you can look at.

Another place to look is the local YMCA if your area has one of those. Often they have reference material on local child care services that they can share with you.

Obviously, the quality of the child care is most important to you when choosing between facilities. But other things to consider are cost, hours of operation, and location. You don’t want to pick a facility that is far from your home, and you don’t want to choose one that is not open when you need it to be open to cope with your specific work schedule and that of your spouses as well.

Before selecting a child care center, be sure to drop in without telling them in advance. You should absolutely feel free to do this. Unannounced visits allow you to see the place as it actually is, and not how they want you to see it. Do the children seem happy? Do the kids seem busy?

Find out what kind of training and experience the staff has. Are there enough staff working there that your kid will get personal attention? There should be!

Is the facility clean, well lit, and safe looking? Are there safety and emergency equipment available in case something goes wrong? Is there a lot of play equipment and toys and things of this nature?

So there you have it, hopefully this little article has given you a good head start towards finding and choosing a day-care service for your children.

Best Divorce Protection

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

By: Jason Markum

Many, if not most of the problems that arise during a divorce between spouses could be avoided with a little preparation. Prenup agreements (or prenuptial agreements as they are more properly called) are just about the best and easiest way for couples to protect themselves during a divorce. There are also postnuptials, but I won’t go into those in this article, you can research those on your own for more information.

The first thing you want to consider is protecting your assets as well as your income. Your prenup agreement should discuss your present assets and income, that goes without saying. But it should also discuss any potential future assets and income you may acquire down the line. It goes without saying that your prenup should be in writing and signed by both the husband and the wife.

It is also very important that both sides have their own legal advice. Do not, I repeat, do not use the same lawyer as your spouse. Many times people have a family lawyer, somebody that has been working with the family for years. Sometimes the new couple will use the family lawyer of the parents of one of the spouses. These are both horrible ideas. Each side should have their own legal representation and their own legal advice because that’s the only way you’re going to get objective advice.

We’ve seen it time and time again when a family lawyer advises both sides and then later the marriage sours. One of the spouses can easily get out of the prenup by arguing that they didn’t understand what they were signing because they didn’t have their own lawyer and the family lawyer that they used was not working for their best interest but rather was working for the interests of one side only… the other side.

So let’s get into the details of the prenup a little more firmly. Any agreement must list specific assets. If you acquire new assets after the prenup has been signed, then you need a new prenup that lists those new assets specifically.

Your prenup should also contain a means of dividing personal property and gifts in the case of divorce. Personal property isn’t usually as valuable as say a house, but it is usually of higher emotional value to one of the spouses. And the last thing you want to have to deal with during a messy divorce is sticky issues around emotional personal property items.

Another item that you want to pay attention to is gifts from parents. Imagine one of your parents dies and leaves you a substantial estate in their Will. Did they mean to leave the gift to both of you, or only to their specific child? This can be a particularly thorny subject to come up during a divorce so you want to make sure that your prenup pays special attention to this area.

Divorces are messy most of the time. But with a proper prenup agreement, hopefully it doesn’t have to be too messy…
